Trail: Mount Sherman

Trailhead Location: From the town of Fairplay head south on Highway 285. After one mile you will pass the intersection with Colorado 9 and begin to go up a hill. About 3/4 of the way up this hill there is a road on the right. Turn onto that road. This road will take you the rest of the way to the trailhead. The road gets progressively worse as you go. Any car can make it at least to the old townsite of Leavick (You will see a large building on the right side of the road). After the town of Leavick there are several spots with parking when you decide you've gone far enough (marked by yellow diamonds on the map). The road ends at a closure gate and you must start hiking from there.

Hike Description: From the closure gate continue along the road past the Dauntless mine. After ascending a hill the road will curve to the right (watch for arrows made from rocks in the road to help you). There are several spur roads off of the main one, however most don't take you far before you realize your on the wrong path. You will see on the hillside above you the Hilltop mine and the road leading to it. This is your destination. After passing the hilltop mine you will come to a level area with an old bunkhouse near the trail. The summit of Sherman is to your right and there is a path beginning to form that takes you directly there. DO NOT take this path. It is steep, loose, and dangerous. The trail actually heads to the left and takes some switch backs up to the saddle on the ridge above. Once on the saddle simply follow the ridge to the summit.
